The retail chain Tesco is extending its hypermarket in Bratislava’s borough of Petržalka into a shopping centre called Galéria. It will add more than 50 shops, cafés and restaurants. Completion is planned for next spring.
“The new Galéria in Petržalka is the biggest investment of Tesco in Slovakia since 2017 when we opened the biggest distribution centre in central Europe near Galanta,” said Martin Kuruc, executive director of Tesco Slovensko as cited in a press release.
The shopping centre will cover over 11,000 square metres. Of that, the hypermarket will take up more than 6,700 square metres. This means that the hypermarket will shrink by more than one third, though the retail chain promises to keep the same assortment of products.
Tesco has the same model, i.e. a shopping centre combining a hypermarket with a shopping gallery, also in Bratislava’s Lamač, Nitra, Dunajská Streda and Trnava.
“Currently we are planning an extension of the shopping centre in Dunajská Streda,” said Kuruc. “We have other projects prepared too; whether they will be carried out depends also on the interest of tenants.”
Tesco, which has operated in Slovakia for more than 20 years, operates 150 outlets of various forms across the country.
